FAQ

Fellowship Eligibility

Are there citizenship requirements for France-Stanford fellowships?

No

Applicants can hold citizenship from any country and be eligible for a France-Stanford fellowship, so long as their primary institutional affiliation is with Stanford or a university or research institution in France.

Can a graduate student or scholar at a university in a French-speaking country outside of France apply for a fellowship?

No

The France-Stanford Center is only able to fund fellows to come to Stanford whose home institution is in France.

Can a Stanford graduate student or early-career scholar receive a fellowship to research in a French-speaking country?

No

The France-Stanford Center is only able to fund Stanford students and scholars to complete fellowships at institutions in France.

Is an applicant to the Visiting Junior Scholar Fellowship eligible if they finished their PhD more than 7 years ago?

Maybe

The applicant is eligible if there was a medical or parental leave of absence taken after PhD completion. The leave dates should be noted in the applicant's resume.

Can fellowship applicants still apply if they will finish their graduate program or postdoc position during the France-Stanford funding cycle?

Maybe

Fellows must be actively enrolled in their graduate programs or in their postdoc positions during the full duration of the fellowship. The fellow can graduate or complete the postdoc in the same funding cycle (September 1, 2027 - August 31, 2028), but only if the fellowship is completed first.

Fellowship Visit Planning

Do the arrival and departure dates matter when planning a fellowship visit?

Yes

  • The visit dates in the proposal must fall fully within the active funding period (September 1, 2027 - August 31, 2028).
  • There may be some flexibility to modify dates after a proposal is accepted, but this is not guaranteed.
  • Fellows should generally plan visits to Stanford during the fall, winter, and/or spring quarters. Summer visits may be suitable for some projects, but applications for summer visits are generally less likely to be successful.
If a Visiting Student Researcher arrives at Stanford in the middle of the month, are the tuition fees charged at 50% for that month?

No

The tuition fees are charged for the full month, even if the fellow is not present for the full month. For that reason, Visiting Student Researchers should time their arrival date within the first week of the calendar month, and conclude their visit in the last week of the calendar month.

Can the France-Stanford Center help fellows find housing?

No

Unfortunately, the France-Stanford Center is unable to assist fellows in finding housing at Stanford or in France.

Collaborative Research and Conference Applications

Do applicants need to be faculty members to apply for a France-Stanford Collaborative Research Project or Conference grant?

Yes

The grants for Collaborative Research Projects and Conferences are only available to Stanford faculty members for administrative purposes. The Stanford faculty member must be a member of the Academic Council or of the University Medical Line. These grants are not open to graduate students, postdocs, or visiting scholars.

Can previous recipients of a France-Stanford Collaborative Research or Conference award apply again?

Yes

The France-Stanford Center gives priority to first-time applicants, but previous recipients are still eligible to apply.

Can the France-Stanford Center provide administrative support for activities like flight booking, reimbursements, or event logistics?

No

As a small center, we are regretfully unable to offer administrative support to Collaborative Research Projects or Conferences beyond coordinating the initial transfer of funds.
